Description
The Wild Azalea Trail has been designated by the Chief of the Forest Service as a National Recreation Trail because of its outstanding scenic values. The trail was created in response to community interests.
Approximately 31 miles in length, the trail is designated for foot or mountain biking traffic only. It is bisected about midway by Louisiana Highway 488 and is accessible by road at several other points. This makes it possible to travel on short sections, a convenience for those who haven't the time or the inclination to hike the entire length of the trail in one outing. The trail route is conspicuously marked with bright yellow paint blazes, and is sign at road crossings.Traversing flat to rolling terrain, the trail winds through pine hills and hardwood bottoms, passing through managed forest areas, clearings, and untouched areas as well. For example, visitors can enjoy the Castor Creek Scenic Area, a 90-acre site where large pine and hardwood trees are left in their natural state. In fact, all 6 of the vegetation communities present on the Evangeline Unit of the Calcasieu Ranger District are found along the trail; bottomland hardwoods, upland hardwoods, mixed pine and hardwoods, pure pine, bogs and natural open areas..The Wild Azalea Trail is used by Bikers and Hikers only. The location of the trailheads are at the Town Hall in Woodworth, Louisiana and at the Valentine Lake Recreation Area. There are also many other points to join the trail shortening the trail length for visitors preference. The Wild Azalea Trail is not a loop trail.

- Finding Your Way: follow the yellow paint blazes closely because old logging roads are numerous throughout the area and can be confusing; other trails will be blazed in blue or white.
- Drinking water: streams along the trail are unsuitable for drinking purposes; it''s best to bring your own.
- Camping: is permitted adjacent to the trail, but campsites must be established at least 30 feet away from the trail center line.
- Trash disposal: all trash carried in on the trail must be carried out.
- Parking: is provided at the town of Woodworth (At the Town Hall), on Forest Roads 273 and 279 and at the Valentine Lake Recreation Complex near the Southshore Campground.
- Campfires: this beautiful wooded area is yours; please protect it as you would your own property - BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE and please do not build fires on the trail.
