Visitors to the 36 mile Sandstone Trail travel through the piney woods of the Kisatchie Hills, offering spectacular views, hilly terrain and beautiful longleaf pine. This trail offers a wide range of scenic views and riding experiences. The trail is designated for OHV''s, motorcycles, horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking.

Facilities: OHV camping is available at Lotus Camp, Corral Camp, and Coyote Camp.

Trail Access: Trailhead facilities are located at Lotus Camp, Corral Camp, and Coyote Camp. Trailheads are also located along Longleaf Scenic Byway. Signs are located at the entrances of all camps. Camping is permitted.
Where Can I Ride?

OHV''s may operate on the Sandstone Trail. The Sandstone Trail is open from May 1st to January 4th and is closed from January 5th through April 30th. All other trails on the Kisatchie Ranger District are closed to OHV use.

All cross-country (off-road, off-trail) travel by any motorized vehicle, including OHV''s is prohibited year-around within the 38,000 acre National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve except on designated routes. Cross country travel is permitted outside the Preserve as long as no resource damage is occurring. Resource damage is defined as exposing soil or damaging vegetation.

All paved roads, gravel roads, and Forest Service system roads are closed to non street legal OHV''s. It is not legal to cut cookies in roads or to ride road cutbanks and fill slopes. It is not legal for riders to make their own trails.

What are the Equipment, Registration, and License Requirements? No vehicle can exceed an overall width of 50 inches. Tires cannot exceed 1 inch lug depth or an operating air pressure of less than 10 pounds. Forest Service approved spark arrestors are required year around on all Kisatchie National Forest lands. Sound must be muffled to 99 db or less. Headlights and taillights are required to be in working order and must be used during times of limited visibility. Vehicle curb weight cannot exceed 700 pounds.
Safety:

Riders should wear appropriate safety gear, carry a first aid kit and never ride alone. A helmet and goggles or face shield is highly recommended.

The trail is two-way. Some parts of the trail are tight and narrow and are maintained in a manner to provide a primitive trail experience. Thus, there are numerous blind turns and hikers, other riders, or horses should be anticipated. Wet rocks, logs, and stream crossings will be slippery. Riding fast is hazardous and is not recommended.

It is unlawful to operate an OHV under the influence of drugs or alcohol or in such a manner that endangers the safety of others.

Tread Lightly: Soils on the Sandstone Trail can range from sands to clay. The soils are sensitive to high levels of disturbance. Plant life on the Kisatchie is plentiful, but still fragile. They help stabilize the soil, provide needed nutrients, retain moisture and provide food and shelter for all forms of wildlife. Please remember this is their home and you are a visitor. Please stay on designated trails.
